Some Good News!

Okay, so, I've been out of the blogging loop for a couple of weeks. I hurt my hand and so . . . yeah. Going two weeks without being able to type definitely tested my patience! Especially since the two loves of my life right now are writing and blogging. I really didn't hurt my hand that bad, but needed to give it time to heal. Health has to come first. But, I have some good news to share.

I'm going to be a guest at Salt Lake Comic Con this year!

Here are some reasons why this is exciting:

  1. Salt Lake Comic Con is the third largest Comic Con in the world. True story. It follows just behind the San Diego Comic Con and New York Comic Con. Salt Lake Comic Con had 120k attendees last year.
  2. Not only do I get to have fun and meet new people (and maybe cross paths with celebs in the backrooms), but I'll get some good practice in as a guest speaker (something I'll probably be doing a lot as a published author.) I love hearing people talk about stories they are passionate about, so that will be fun too.
  3. I've never been to a Comic Con (and frankly, once thought I never would).

For years I've loved discussing and ranting and, honestly, obsessing over great stories, especially contemporary ones. Through most my life, I've journaled about them. Then I started my blog, and if anything, it's only made that passion stronger. I love having an outlet for my writerly thoughts on how stories are put together and why they have a specific effect on audiences. Even better is being able to share my thoughts and findings with fans of that story. (Thank you internet!)

Since I started blogging (among other things), I've had some people suggest I speak at conferences and conventions. I figured I'd wait until I had a novel published, since right now all I have is small pieces, most of which are in small places. But I kept getting the feeling the suggestions were something I should follow. Apparently working in the industry for three years and having an English degree are enough to qualify me.

Like I mentioned earlier, I once never thought I would go to a Comic Con. Let alone be a guest at the first one I attend. But over my life I've learned and relearned that I freaking love fiction. And I particularly love the fiction of our day. And I love marrying my background in writing with other's fiction. And, my life is so much better doing what I love.

So, if you're going to Salt Lake Comic Con, feel free to find me! I'll keep you guys informed on the any developments about it.

Next week I'll be posting my first article dissecting Interstellar. In this blog series, I'll talk about how the story gained power from crossing opposites, and exactly why that works in storytelling. I'll talk about why (and how) it was so emotional, explain why the concepts were fresh and killer (and how you can use the same techniques to come up with your own), how the Nolans skyscraped stakes and costs to ramp up tension, explain the different types of conflicts, and discuss how the movie shifts context for a nice twist in the story and little twists in the dialogue. I'm sure I'll talk about plenty of other things too. So see you next week!
